Basketball Drills Basics

It is tough to over-exaggerate how much people love basketball. A basic understanding of basketball will make the game more enjoyable. Read this article to gain the knowledge that will make watching or playing the game more fun.


Make sure you are dribbling the right way. When you dribble, only use your fingertips instead of your palms. This method gives you much more control of the ball. You should be dribbling the ball at your side instead of in front of your body. The ball should always be dribbled at waist level. Keep your eyes up.

Keep your head up when you dribble. You should never be looking at the basketball while dribbling. Bring the basketball with you everywhere you go. Dribble as you walk to the market. If you are looking at the ball, you cannot see what is happening down the court in front of you.


Make sure to practice catching passes. When practicing make sure you drill yourself to catch errant throws as well as picture perfect passes. In the heat of the game, not every pass is going to hit the bulls-eye. You and your team mates will be happier if you (and they) are more versatile.

Don't pump too much iron if you plan on being a jump shooter. While muscle mass is good for any basketball position, perimeter play requires less than other positions. Some shooting guards that play professionally have such big arms that their field goal rate went down.

Passing quickly without dribbling is a great way to practice. This is very hard to accomplish, but it forces you and your fellow players to work on accurate passing skills. Do not get frustrated if it it seems difficult at first, over time your team's passes will become more accurate.

Do you want to fool the other team? Try doing what is known as a back pass. To accomplish this pass, grasp the ball using your dominant hand. Then you will want to pull the ball into position behind your back. Then do a wrist flick in the same direction that you want the ball to end up. This helps trick your opponents.

Being able to anticipate your opponent is a key skill. Watch games if you can and look at their tendencies. Learn which of the opposing players are left-dominant and which are right-dominant. Once you start to get to know the other team, you can do a lot better when you're on defense. A defender that is knowledgeable is an effective defender.

Consistent free throws require a consistent technique. Inconsistent shooting will lead to inconsistent results. The best way to perfect your free throw shooting technique is through repetition by practicing the same routine over and over again. You'll miss if you don't have a good routine down.

Be sure you're doing the right kinds of exercises off the court to help you on it. Running, both sprints and long distance, can help your game. Build up your core muscles and the strength in your forearms. If you can develop your confidence through off-court exercise, this can even help your shooting.
